I'm a lurker, but I love all the beautiful kids you all post, and thought maybe mine could join them again! (I do this about once a year.) Here's Joe, about to turn 2 already. Jeez! ( In which Joe says: Stop bothering me! ) |

80 acres: the great species hunt So far, I've recorded only species that I saw (or saw unequivocal evidence of, such as tracks or scat easily identified) without manipulation other than putting up bird feeders and putting out water.
However, temptation looms. This it the eighth year we've worked on the place and the species count now stands at 783. Raw ego would love to make 800 species by year's end. I need only 17 more species--anything, plant or animal. If it were a wet year, instead of a drought year, lots of things would be out and about, including lots more insects. But it's a drought year. I go out with camera and see only what I've already found, mostly...maybe one new species a week of insects, and there aren't that many weeks left in the year. Also, the big stuff's just about all IDed.
So...there's collection. "Sweeping" with a net to find additional insects (probably there, but not in abundance), and digging into dead trees and going out at night with a black light and/or moth bait. OTOH, I'm supposed to be a wildlife manager, and in my own mind that means not hassling the wildlife (by, for instance, collecting them) especially not in a difficult, stressful climate situation.
I seriously, seriously want to get 17 more species. I'm sure we *have* 17 more species. Doing a complete census would be valuable (for other people who are trying to restore land) and also census falls within the seven activities required each year. But is my desire for another 17 species this year mere ego, or can it really be justified, and if so, what kinds of search are justified?
We shall see where conscience and science meet, on this one. |

Just one for now, I've been wanting to post this. This is Icarus, aka Icky, our resident monster. He's about 5 month in his picture and he's a terror, but a very cute one lol. I think this picture shows his true nature XD |

first finished quilt http://ferfab.blogspot.com/2008/07/first-finished-quilt.html
We have had dozens in progress for a while, but finally one is finished. Here is Jenny, who's shop may never be the same again, holding it. It's manic here, I can't believe that Dot has done 5 quilts so far on her first day at a stand up machine. How cool is that? Now I must stop gossiping and get back to work. I've got more appearing all the time. |

WIP: snippet This has been an eventful week, writing-wise. Some writing is technically difficult (you're trying to accomplish something in a particular way for a particular purpose and it requires a well-equipped writer-toolbox) and some writing is psychologically and/or creatively difficult (for example, you're trying to get into the head of a character, or a culture, that means doing something different inside your own head.)
Here's a snippet from a few days ago; there's a lot more after this but I'm not ready to share it yet. And first-draft snippets may look different in the final book.
.........................................
When the Seneschal pulled the door open, Kieri expected the smell of bone, but instead the air had the freshness of spring outdoors. Instead of dusty old bones, all in shades of cream to yellow from their time in the earth, the bones were brilliantly colored. Kieri stared. Human bones didn't come those colors--colors as bright as fresh-dyed yarn, scarlet, green, blue, yellow. Here and there light glinted from other things--from curves of metal, copper and bronze and gold and silver, from jewels set in the metal or laid on the stones. And on every skeleton, fresh green leaves: one between the teeth, one across each eye-hole, one on either side of the skull, where ears might have been.
.........................................
For those familiar with the Paksenarrion fantasy world, this is indeed Kieri Phelan, in Lyonya, after Oath of Gold, but before his coronation. This book is throwing surprises at me, which is always a good sign.

arse! http://www.mitchbenn.com/blog/438/arse.html Spoil this and I'll find you and kill you So I'm in Leeds, sitting in the foyer of the Radisson Hotel, where they have an internet terminal which guests (like myself) can use for free. Finding this terminal gave me a glimmer of hope, one that has now been dashed as it turns out that this computer is way too old and shonky to handle BBC iPlayer (took two or three goes to log onto this blog, which should give you and idea how old and shonky). |

Minor WTF I work for a dry cleaners. We have several plants around town, but my location is a drop store -- you leave the clothes here, our truck will take them to a plant to be cleaned, then bring them back here so you can pick them up. The truck is scheduled to be here around 9 AM for the morning pickup.
Just had a guy come in with a 13 piece order, about half an hour after the driver picked up today's orders. I told him that the clothes would be ready Monday night (we're closed on Sundays), and he started out saying this was OK. Then he starts in on why can't he get them today. I told him that he'd missed the cutoff, and he left. For maybe one minute.
Back in the door, still complaining that he can't get same day service. He's now assuring me that the last time he was in, it was 11 AM and "the girl" had the clothes ready for him that night, so there's no reason I can't do the same for him. Polite phrasing, but on the edge of a 5 year old "whyyyyyy" tone of voice.
The cutoff time for the stores is 9. The plants can take clothes for same day at 11, because the clothes aren't being trucked anywhere, but we can't. I tried explaining this to him, but he's insisting that he's never been to one of the plants, he only brings his clothes to us and I'm just lazy for refusing to call the driver back.
He finally took his clothes off to one of our plants (at least that's where he said he was going), and I voided his invoice off the computer. Then I looked up his records. Since the computer system went in, almost a year ago, he's been in twice not counting today. One time, his order was invoiced at 8 AM and yes, came back that same day. The other time, his order was invoiced at 6 PM. Dude, learn to tell time already! |

I think I finally got to sleep around 4.30 this morning and slept through till 10.30. Breakfast and some chores and the rest of the weekend is mine, hurrah!
I forgot to arrange an appointment with the dentist and now I have toothache.
It's not too bad at the moment and a lovely cocktail of paracetamol and ibuprofen is taking the edge off it. I shall nip out shortly and ensure a good supply for the weekend. Maybe with some codeine, just in case.
On other matters, seeing as I still haven't sorted out the TV reception for the Carpathia I am rather hoping that the Doctor Who finale will be on the torrents pronto this evening. I am anxious to know how it turns out and hopeful that unlike last year, it will not feature Doctor Dobby. We are ordering in a curry tonight; the two will go together nicely. |

let's go fishing! these are pictures of how i found boo this morning. for anyone who doesn't know, boo is my kitty that has some sort of brain damage/neurological issue, our vet isn't 100% sure what. but he has balance issues, which makes me wonder how he got up there. at first he was just watching the fish and i thought that was it. then later i realized he was stuck LOL. the tank is just on an old table and you can see in the pictures that we use the exposed part of the table to set stuff and i hadn't cleaned yet from the night before. poor little boo, try as he could he just could not find a way off the tank. fish watching ( +2 ) Current Mood: amused |

Patchwork Corner - sweat shop http://ferfab.blogspot.com/2008/07/patchwork-corner-sweat-shop.html
The quiltathon is in full swing. I've been longarming since 10am and the pile of tops waiting is still growing. One lady just popped in to wish us luck and is still here working her socks off. I've lost track of how many tops she has made. The first 5 quilts are being bound and I really have to get back to work. Do come and join in if you are in the area. |

WTF Ok, so while I'm recovering from surgery, I'm helping my mom out a bit at her photography studio, answering calls, scheduling appointments, all that jazz. Right now we're having a special - and by right now, I mean it ends today. It's a special price that includes a picture for her new beach scene she has built at her studio. We've been booked solid every single day of this special. ( Procrastination WTF ) Current Mood: amused |

On a break so I'm posting some photos and watching the women's finale in Wimbledon. Sunny day, a bit windy and short, flappy skirts. Mmmm. ;o) I finally got all of the Slimelight shots (Uberbyte and the really badly lit RBN) finished. Another lot done and archived. All that remains is a revisit of Glastonbury, Wells and Bath and my backlog is gone. Good thing, too, the scottchurch workshop is on the 2nd of August. yet more on flickr Current Mood: procrastinating |

1. If you cut the bar code and other identifying information (store #, transaction #, date, etc.) off your receipt, you are effectively rendering your receipt invalid. I need that information or I have to do a return without a receipt, which means I need your driver's license or state ID. It is not my fault you tore off all the important information or that didn't carry your driver's license but thank you for calling me ignorant. I hope you heard me laughing at you as you stormed away.
2. I cannot give you a bag unless you buy something. Let me repeat that since you are staring at me. (Perhaps you, too, think I'm ignorant?) I CANNOT GIVE YOU A BAG UNLESS YOU BUY SOMETHING. I don't care if you're 10. And to your mother, no, I could not "have gave" her a bag because she didn't buy something. Later, while her mom was buying something (I gave them a bag!) she handed me a shirt, gave me a look, and said "put this away" in that tone. Little bitch.
3. And then there was the woman returning a pair of jeans the washer had ripped up. She didn't bother to dry them, just bagged them up soaking wet. |
