I thought, when I got to the car park this evening, that I was going to be even later getting home. A car was partly blocking the exit ramp (it is a multi-storey car park), its driver having severely misjudged the angle required to leave; the car wasn't going anywhere in a hurry, as its front end was quite seriously bent. A police car was waiting on the other side of the road, and what I take to have been the car's driver was sitting on a chair in the entrance hall of the car park itself.

He was an elderly gentleman, perhaps late 60s or early 70s. I wonder what his excuse will be - will he, too, claim to have muddled the accelerator and the brake, as the 86-year-old who caused such carnage in Santa Monica yesterday seems to have done?

I'm sure I'll think differently when I get to that sort of age, but at the moment I think we need to look at how older drivers are treated with regard to retaining licences. In theory my current licence will be good until the day before I turn 70 (after I passed my driving test aged 18). This applies to everyone who doesn't have a medical condition which affects, or may affect, their ability to drive. But I'm sure there are many thousands of people driving around out there who shouldn't be on the roads - either because they are impaired by illness and don't realise it, or because they are impaired by illness but don't want to lose the freedom of driving, or because their eyesight has dropped below the minimum standards. Since my sight's crap anyhow, I get it tested regularly, but there are an awful lot of people out there who do not...

  • Gah -- "friends" page styles

Anyone know how to turn off LJ's new "feed" style friends pages? Do not want. I find my existing 25-entries-per-page to be much more manageable.

  • Gissa job...

No, no, not me, but a friend of mine is losing his retail job this coming Monday when the place where he works closes down. (Nice timing...) Anyone…
